Island Dwelling
On the 25th January 2007, the new home of Totoco (alias Casa Tortuga) became Isla de Ometepe.
A fortuitous encounter in early December led to us negotiating tenancy of the rustic house called Casa Saint Jude owned by David Mitchell, the current President of The Ometepe and Bainbridge Sister Islands Association. We are delighted to have an open dialogue with David and even happier to be renting his vacation home for the next 6 – 8 months while we construct the Eco-lodge.
Bainbridge Island is a small yet wealthy island off the coast of Seattle in the USA. The relationship between the Sister islands is well established and celebrated its 20th anniversary in December 2006. With the help of Bainbridge Island’s residents, Ometepe has been able to realize some major development projects including internet access for the Maderas side of the island. All accounts indicate the association is one built on respect and friendship. This observation gives us extra confidence as we endeavour to build the reputation of Totoco and its objectives.
Living on Ometepe is everything we expected. We now no longer need an alarm clock to wake us up of a morning – the many Roosters perform that job flawlessly. Each day upon awakening we are met with the various sounds of nature – birds singing, crickets communicating and monkeys playing. At times we even hear the less familiar sound of a car passing – although not too often.
Casa San Judas is located a stones throw from the Hernandez family (the Cooperative from whom we are buying the land) and a pleasant 15 minutes walk through Balgue to the property. This makes for easy accessibility for the extensive amount of work needed over the coming year.
For your reference, the official postal address of the new house is:
Casa San Judas: Puesto de salud 150m al Sur, Balgue, Altagracia, Rivas NICARAGUA
