Madroñal Water Project

It has now been nearly a full year since Totoco first made contact with the Water Committee of the town of Madroñal to which our property is already connected with an existing 1/2inch tube that runs the length of the property from the top all the way down to the bottom.

In light of the extreme importance of having a consisitent and abundant supply of water, commitments were made to support the committee through direct funding from Totoco as well as through a call for 3rd party donations. This call was met by Matti Emondts who generously donated $8500.

Unfortunately not a single dollar has yet been invested as a result of continued uncertainty surrounding an existing project funded by the EU which was meant to commence work months ago but appears to be increasingly doubtfull. In light of these developments Totoco has met twice with the committee in recent weeks in order to agree on short-term improvements that can realized independent from the EU project. As such, the following conclusions and agreements have been reached;
  • Community water needs can be split into 2 main areas: 1) Main supply and central storage of water from springs higher up the mountain and 2) Distribution and decentralized storage of water within the community.
  • Representatives of UMAS (Mobile Water and Sanitation Unit) will make a 2-day visit to the community to meet with the committee in order to consult on low-cost, high-impact projects that can been realized within the local distribution and storage system.
  • The Madroñal water committee will make direct contact with representatives of the EU project in order to better inform them of the community`s needs in terms of a main supply and storage of water.

It is hoped that the UMAS visit will take place before christmas and that investments can be made in the short-term.
