Single Priority

As of this week we are entering into the second month of not having vehicle access to our property due to a local conflict between certain members of the community and the Alfonso Valle Castillo cooperative. All parties concerned are still adamant that Totoco´s presence within the community is welcome despite the fact that we are being seriously effected by the delay in construction that we are suffering. In the interest of maintaining our neutrality and protecting Totoco´s long-term interests, we have resisted involving ourselves overly, preffering to allow the community and local authorities time to resolve the issue amicably. Time, however, is now forcing our hand.

A first hearing with the municipal judge will take place late next week but our faith in the ability of local authorities to resolve the situation swiftly is by now significantly reduced. As such we plan to involve ourselves more directly in the coming days and weeks in order to mediate between the two parties and force a solution that will allow us the access we need. Rest assured that all legal avenues are being explored as well as efforts to use any and all personal relations who might be able to support our efforts. We recognize that every week delay in contsruction signifies lost income.

In the meantime there is still plenty of important work that can be realized which doesn´t require large amounts of materials. Principally there is the necessary clearing of the proposed route that the road will take from the bottom section of the property to the top. There are many large rocks (some the size of a small car) that must be removed and positioned elsewhere and this is done with iron bars and large logs and is time-consuming work. Path creation is also crucial and can be achieved with materials found on te property. Planting has been largely completed and what becomes important now is reinforcing the guilds to minimize maintenance work during the summer. Despite the fact that the workers are being kept busy, resolving the issue of vehicle access is clearly the single biggest priority and we hope to report progress sooner rather than later.
