Happy New Year

Happy 2008 to all and their families!

As the new year takes off, construction of the Totoco Eco-lodge gains momentum. We now have 45 full-time workers. Most of these are focused on the creation of the road to the top platform. To date, we have cleared all major rocks and trees and levelled the path. Using the two-strip rock and mortar approach we are nearing the completion of the first 100 meters of road from the bottom of the property. Within the next two weeks a second team will commence working from the top and, with time, will meet up with the other team.

The Storage shed now has the skeleton roof framing in place and the roof sheeting will go on this week. We are starting with the placement of zinc over which, with time, will go tiles. The tiles are locally produced and have now been ordered but delivery will not take place until March. This, however, only impacts the asethics and not functionality.

As the dry season slowly sets in, we are preparing our water system. The highest priority of which is two ferro-cement tanks at the highest point of the property. The foundations of these two 6meter diameter tanks have now been prepared and we will be pouring the concrete slabs towards the end of January when Chris Shanks returns to the island.

Due to concern that our budget is under-pressure as a consequence of delays, Management has decided to give construction priority to those structures that will maximize income for Totoco. This means we have decided to hold-off on building the two dormitories on the lower platform and rather will focus our efforts on constructing the 9 private cabins, bar, restaurant and office/reception. Once these are in place we will then, budget permitting, build the other remaining structures outlined in our business plan.
