With all deciduous trees having lost their leaves, we are entering the last month and a half of the dry season. "Officially", the rain season begins mid May when the whole Island of Ometepe goes into planting mode. Apart from constructing the eco-lodge, another priority lies in the preparation of TOTOCO's nursery.
Normally, one to two weeks after the first rains have arrived planting begins. It is essential we are ready for this intense planting period. To ensure we meet this requirement, we have therefore employed our first local female who will concentrate on the planting preparation. At this moment Anielka is under supervision of Katherine Young whom is bringing years of experience as an Ethno Botanist. Anielka is a 18 year old who so far has proven to be happy working with plants and eager to learn what mother nature has to offer. She will be responsible for all nursery related
projects and at this moment in time together with Kata she has support from Elder,
Trinidad and Jayson. Some of the actual work consists of: selection of species, seed collection, seed preparation techniques, fixing nutrients into the soil, composting, propagation techniques and grafting to mention a few.
This year's planting on the top platform will receive a lot of attention. Working with succession stages, last year the wind breaks were positioned and planted while this year we will mainly focus on native tree, palm species and ornementals. Again with diversity in mind.
